In 2018 I saw an event on Facebook for The New Gullah Supper Club. I heard of this event the year prior but didn’t go for whatever reason. This time I wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass me by. What is the supper club? Well, it’s ticketed four-course dinner catered by Chef Kardea Brown in a designated weekend location.
Setting
The New Gullah Supper Club was a two-day event. I attended the Sunday Supper Club alone. Although I was one of the first ones to show up, others came shortly afterward. The setting was a cozy one-story home in Mt. Pleasant, SC. We were seated white folding chairs outside at the elongated tables covered with white tablecloths and white napkins. On the tables were appetizers such as boiled peanuts, pimento cheese, pickles, and crackers. Beverages were iced water and sweet tea in clear glass pitchers. As the night approached, the string of lights illuminated the Lowcountry backyard.
The New Gullah Supper Club Meal
Chef Kardea and her family presented our meals and made us feel at home. Her lovely mother and aunt were dressed in white and black attire while serving. Very pleasant I might add. Her Aunt, TC (Too Cute) was hilarious. We got to know a little about her. What’s astounding is that she’s a caregiver for her husband who has Alzheimer’s. He was present and helping too.
Socializing
Besides the food, another highlight of the Supper Club was getting to know the guests. Again, I came alone, but I planned to mingle. I tried with these ladies who were at my table, but they really weren’t into conversing with me. As the food was delivered we all started eating, and conversations were flowing. I started talking to this guy KJ at the other table. Then I began to engage with a couple who came in a tad bit late. Lo and behold the woman (I think her name is Susie) is from Manning, SC. She and her husband live in Charleston. She even shared some helpful information with me on free educational tools from Google. KJ and I exchanged contacts because he was interested in me talking with the students about nursing careers at his school.
Overall it was an enjoyable evening at The New Gullah Supper Club. There wasn’t a huge crowd. The hospitality and the food were good. I didn’t want to eat it all in one sitting as I wanted to save some food for my husband to taste. I met two really interesting people. Before we left, Chef Kardea let us in on a little secret that she’s getting her own TV show! I told her if she need a taste tester, I was available. The show actually premiered in late 2019.

Recipe- Grandma’s Candied Yams
I made this dish based on a recipe Chef Kardea shared on Instagram. It is delicious! I found a new method to make candied yams. And guess what? It met my Grandma’s seal of approval! I sent her a sample and she said it was good. Jokingly, but serious too, I told her that’s my new dish for family meals. I even shared my accomplishment on my Instagram. It has about 300 views!
