Here’s a question up for debate. Which is better, sweet potato or pumpkin? If you tasted pumpkin before, can you tell the difference?
We’ve never had a pumpkin pie or any pumpkin dish served for Thanksgiving. Well for any holiday for that matter. Thanksgiving and Christmas won’t be the same without sweet potato pie in my family. Let me make it clear, homemade sweet potato pie. Not a Patti LaBelle pie from Walmart or any other already made pie. My grandmothers don’t play that. I prefer their pies over Ms. Patti’s anyway. No disrespect.
Typically African-Americans will have sweet potato pie to serve for dinner. Have you ever had pumpkin pie? What about anything made with pumpkin? Here’s my experience. Pumpkin sounds nasty, but it’s actually not bad. Now I didn’t go requesting pumpkin. This is what happened. Me having a sweet tooth, I wanted something sweet to eat while at Aunt Dee’s house. She offered me some muffins. I helped myself to two of them. They were delicious. I inquired what kind were and she replied it was pumpkin. I couldn’t believe it. If I didn’t see the label, I’d swear she was lying.
I can honestly say there’s no need to frown when the word pumpkin comes up. Last year I sampled a tasty pumpkin dessert from Publix. It was so good, that it made me want to make a pumpkin dish. Well at the time I bought the ingredients, but didn’t make the dessert. However, I have a definite plan to do it this time around. I found a simple recipe on Pinterest that I’m going to make for Thanksgiving. It’s a glazed cinnamon streusel pumpkin cake. Watch out family! Get your taste buds ready. It’s going to be delicious.
Finally, whether you are eating sweet potato or pumpkin, have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
