Since the pandemic hit, a lot of us have been at home. Our travel plans have been cancelled. So where else would we be but home? Since we’ve been home a lot this year whether working or quarantining, I decided to develop a list of songs related to home or a house. And you can use this list of songs to play “Name That Tune” on Zoom with friends and family. My coworkers did one with a “giving” theme for our United Way Campaign. Well since you asked, YES I won. LOL😂
Although the songs listed have a home/house theme, many are primarily centered around love. There’s also a few about having a good party. You know I love gospel music and some are on the list too. When you think about it, our body is a temple. The gospel songs are referencing the house as us, the people.
Home is a place where you are loved, comfortable, and free. I hope ya’ll are staying safe at home, protecting yourself, and others.
1. Home – Stephanie Mills
This song made a debut in the musical The Wiz, in which Stephanie Mills played Dorothy. If you get a chance you should check out the NBC live version of the musical. It aired a few years ago starring David Alan Grier, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Uzo Aduba, and again Stephanie Mills was featured.
2. Home- BeBe Winans
This is my favorite Bebe Winans song. The words are so special. To sum it up, if you’ve lost your way, you can always go back home where love is waiting for you.
3. A Heart is a House For Love – The Dells
Is there a heart in the house tonight? This song is from The Five Heartbeats movie! I have the DVD in a closet somewhere. Just to show my age a little, I recall recording this song from the radio on my Sony tape player back in the day. I absolutely love this song!
4. Love is a House- Force MDs
This video screams 1980s all over it! It’s another favorite of mine. “Love’s a house, love’s a home. I don’t wanna be alone. In your arms, I need to be.” Do y’all remember this one?
5. Bless This House- Dorinda Clark-Cole
She is one of The Clark Sisters. This song is from one of her solo projects. I don’t know about you, but I surely want God to bless my house. I pray He blesses your house too in this season. Oh and since you’re home, make sure you watch The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel movie that came out earlier this year on Lifetime.
6. My House- Flo Rida
This rap song was very popular among sporting events. The hook on the song is catchy though. “Welcome to my house….We don’t have to go out.” People have changed up the words lately to reflect the quarantining during Coronovirus.
7. Bad Boy Having a Party- Luther Vandross
Apparently Luther was sneaking out of the house to go to a house party . Sounds like it was worth it.
8. House Party- Tony! Toni! Tone!
I know the millennials remember House Party. If you are having a house party during the pandemic keep your guest count low and social distance please.
9. Get Your House in Order- Dottie Peoples
If your church choir didn’t sing this back in the 90s, then I don’t know what to say. Now those who do know this song, when Ms. Dottie says, “Get your house…..in order. ” What’s next? Choir- Oooooohhhhhh. Fun fact: When Hiliary Clinton was running in the presidential election, Ms. Dottie came to our church and rendered a few selections.
10. A House is Not a Home – Luther Vandross
Now if you are single or going through a break up, don’t let this song get to you.
11. Clean This House- Isaac Carree
Isaac is definitely talking about cleaning up his temple and his life. Like he says in the song, all of us need a little cleaning sometimes.
12. Sweet Home Alabama- Lynyrd Skynyrd
If you saw the movie Sweet Home Alabama you should be a little familiar with this song.
13. Take Me Home, Country Roads- John Denver
This country song is soothing. Makes you think of driving down the backroads filled with trees where homes are spread out miles at a time.
14. Sittin’ Home- Total
The song has a catchy beat, but it’s about a woman in a relationship who feels alone because her man is hardly home.
15. Sittin’ Up In My Room- Brandy
The radio station in Charleston, SC has been playing this song every week for years! In the words of my husband, “This song still knocks.” Were you dancing when Brandy sung this hit on Verzuz?
16. This House- Tracie Spencer
Do you remember this 1990s jam? The thought provoking song is still relevant today.
Since you’re at home and probably have some cleaning to do. What better way to do it than with some music? You may want to check out my post including a list of songs by Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin here.
Hope you enjoy!
