I recently shared a post on Black-owned restaurants in Charleston. Now I have some Black-owned dessert shops to share. If you’ve gone out to eat, had a picnic in the park, or had a date night, then you should treat yourself to some desserts. Here are my recommendations. These shops are located in Summerville, North Charleston, and even online.
1. Park Circle Creamery
I absolutely love Park Circle Creamery. I learned about this jewel last summer. It’s so good. Let me be honest with y’all. After a 2-hour bike ride on the Nexton trail, my husband and I went here for a treat. I know that sounds bad, I couldn’t say no. Here at Park Circle Creamery, you can find homemade ice cream. You can choose from natural flavors such as lemon crunch, chocolate, butter pecan, vanilla, and more. The coconut is my favorite.
You can pay for your purchases with cash or credit card. The Black-owned dessert shop was temporarily closed during Covid but is back open at a new location in Park Circle area of N. Charleston. There’s also a new location in Carnes Crossing area of Summerville. The customer service is great!
2. Swank
Here at this swank eatery, you can purchase donuts, brownies, milkshakes, macaroons, or even have a cake made. My friend Shawn told me about Swank. I finally tried it for the first time last year on our girl’s day out at the park. I got a blondie for me and a brownie for her. Both were tasty.
A few months ago my husband and I went to Swank to get their pimento cheese chicken biscuit. I saw it on Instagram and had to have it. It was good. That’s the same day we went to the beach on Kiawah Island.
The eatery is not only Black-owned but woman-owned too. Swank is located in Summerville. There is limited seating indoors and outdoors. The staff is very friendly.
3. Daddy’s Girls Bakery
The Black-owned dessert shop was originally located in the Charleston International Airport. Now they have their own brick & mortar location on Reynolds Ave in N. Charleston. They have the best chewies in town. Chewies are kinda like brownies, but a little gooier. They also have cupcakes, cake pops, and cookies.
4. The Other Plate
This cookie shop is online. Cookies are also available for purchases at various shops in the Downtown Charleston area. I tasted cookies for the first time at the Charleston Vegan Festival. It was good, plus it was healthy, so I was all in. I ordered some for myself. It came promptly. I also ordered some for my church sister Maria since I knew she was vegan. She liked them too.
5. Cinnabon at Charleston International Airport
I love Cinnabon. You just can’t go wrong with them. Last month in June, the first female minority-owned, in-line business. The owner is a Black woman. When you are catching your flight or returning from your flight, stop by Cinnabon at the airport for a quick dessert.
6. Smallcakes
I recently learned about Smallcakes thanks to Black Food Fridays. It’s a franchise shop located in Summerville. Smallcakes is owned by a Black woman. Here you will find homemade cupcakes and ice cream. I’m going to check them out soon.
