Have you ever been to Savannah, Ga? If your answer is yes, then I have a list of fun options you probably haven’t even tried. If you haven’t been you should definitely put Savannah on your travel list.
The charming city is a short drive away from the Midlands and Lowcountry of South Carolina. Savannah is somewhat similar to Charleston, SC with beaches, cobblestone streets, seafood, and so much history. Here’s a short list of some things to do in Savannah, Georgia.
1. Riverboat Cruise
Hop aboard the Georgia Queen or the Savannah River Queen for a relaxing cruise along the Savannah River. Not only will you get amazing views of the river, but eat as well. There are options of lunch, brunch, and dinner. You can also choose a 2 hour Gospel Cruise on Monday evenings. The first time I got on the cruise was during the early stages of my husband and I dating. If you need a date night idea here’s one for sure.
2. Tanger Outlet
I know most ladies love to shop, so this is a good place to go. Trust me I’ve been a couple of times. I’m pictured with a couple of gal pals below. I’m a picky shopper, but managed to find some things I liked. All of us walked away with at least one Coach bag that day. Other stores you will find at Tanger Outlet include: Pandora, Banana Republic, Gap, and more.
3. The Indigo Journey Walking Tour
This is a 1.5 hr walking tour that you don’t want to miss. There’s so much history shared that you wouldn’t typically find in a textbook. Check out my experience here. I highly recommend it. I’m pictured below in front of a barracoon on one of our stops on the walking tour.
4. Savannah Food and Wine Festival
The Savannah Food and Wine Festival is a 6 day festival that occurs in November. There’s multiple events to attend. My husband, myself, my sister and her friend attended a Saturday event called The Taste of Savannah. It was our first time and we had fun.
On arrival we submitted our tickets and then we received our complimentary wine glassess and wooden tokens. The tokens allow you to get food. We sampled barbecue ribs, multiple drinks (natural juices, teas, moonshine, and wine) and watched cooking demonstrations which included eating more food. All of this took place outside at the Georgia State Railroad Museum. Vendors from Atlanta, GA, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina were present. Rodney Scott of Rodney Scott’s BBQ in Charleston, SC was there. His Hemingway, SC restaurant was previously featured on The Travel Channel by the way.
5. First African Baptist Church
Near Franklin Park is the First African Baptist Church. It is the oldest Black church in North America. The church was a vessel of the Underground Railroad. Just like the last photo below, inside this church you will see the small round symmeterical holes carved into the wooden floors by the enslaved Africans. I was amazed when I saw it in person.
6. River Street Marketplace
Here’s your opportunity to walk along the cobblestone street, view the Savannah River, eat, shop, and people watch. Just recently, we heard an older man singing the classic gospel song, “I Opened My Mouth To The Lord”. He had a great voice. Like he could’ve been on America’s Got Talent. Also along the street is a public visitors center where you can use the restroom and check out brochures for more things to do in Savannah.
7. Tybee Island
Tybee Island is also referred to as Savannah’s Beach. The beach is about a 25 minute drive from downtown Savannah. It’s delightful to see whether you get out on the white sandy beach or just ride through the town. Accommodations include bed & breakfasts, cottages, condos, and non-chain hotels. Don’t expect to see Hilton or Marriott hotels on the beach.
8. Dining
Two restaurants that I’ve tried recently are Huey’s and Fiddler’s Crab House and Oyster Bar. Here you can get seafood, burgers, and salads. Both are on River Street.
Huey’s Fiddler’s
Looking for some southern cooking or a good home cooked meal, try Mrs. Wilkes. It’s is a popular restaurant. They’ve been featured on NBC’s Today show. I had the pleasure of eating some good food here during a college trip. Quite the experience. Don’t expect to walk in and sit at a private table with whoever you came with. No ma’am! No sir! You sit at a big table with strangers. Just bring your table manners and you’ll be fine. One more thing, the restaurant is not open on the weekends.
The Lady and Sons Restaurant is another popular place in case you’re still a fan of Paula Deen. Remember that scandal when it was revealed that she used racial slurs back in the day towards her Black employees. If you don’t, I do. You can google it. However, my husband and I went, but this was before the scandal. We were dating at the time. Since we came to Savannah we thought we’d give the place a try. There were no tables available so we sat at the bar and got food from the buffet. The food was so greasy and full of salt. Although we got our bellies filled, we were slightly disappointed.
9. Mobile Tours
There are multiple ways to see the city of Savannah. I mentioned the walking tour earlier, but there’s more. You can hop on a trolley, do a group pedal powered tour (I don’t know the proper term, but everyone sits on a seat and pedal like they’re on a bike while the tour guide maneuvers the vehicle), ride a bicycle, or even a segway. Looks like fun, doesn’t it?
10. First Friday
There’s a free event called First Friday in Savannah. At this outdoor event you will find art, entertainment, food, and fireworks along River Street. Who doesn’t love a free event?
Hope you all enjoy Savannah! We did! Please comment and tell me if you’ve done one of these activities or if I left something out.
