Hey y’all! It’s been a few months since I’ve written or posted anything new. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy in August, so I had some time away. Most of my time is spent breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding has several benefits. The most important one is that it provides natural nutrients and antibodies to protect the baby from infection. Breastfed babies have fewer allergies, ear infections, and gastrointestinal issues. Breast milk is easily digested. It also stimulates taste and smell for the baby.
Breastfeeding may not be the same for each mother. However, I want to share some must-have items with you to improve your experience.
1. Boppy Pillow
The pillow is shaped like a crescent. With the pillow, you can have your baby in multiple positions while you feed. The football hold position is the best! It really allows you to be hands-free. That’s if you need to multi-task and check emails, make appointments, etc.
2. Haakaa
This is a hand-held silicone, BPA-free breast pump. It’s convenient. I use it while I’m breastfeeding to catch the milk from my other breast. When running errands or traveling I carry it with me. It’s also good to release milk when the breasts become engorged and have a heavy or full feeling.
3. Storage Bags
After I gave birth I was excited to breastfeed. I knew the milk could be stored in the freezer, but I didn’t know exactly how. I was thinking maybe a plastic container. The lactation consultant didn’t provide that information. Plus, I don’t remember reading about it in the stack of discharge instructions. I purchased bags by Lasinoh and I like them so far. It has a double seal and a label on it. It’s also sterilized and BPA-free.
4. Nipple Cream
Breastfeeding can take a toll on your nipples. They can become dry and that will can lead to cracks in the skin. The nipples can also become bruised or blistered. You want to keep them moisturized. That can be done with nipple cream or coconut oil.
The hospital provided me with some Purelan samples. It’s made with lanolin. In case you’re wondering, I haven’t had any issues, but I am proactive in preventing any issues. I rotate between the Purelan and coconut oil.
5. Breastfeeding Cover
This is great to have when feeding in public or at home with company. I have one that comes over my head like a poncho. It’s lightweight and stretchy. I’m able to peek inside to ensure my baby is still latching on to the breast. Plus, it can be stylish. I have another one that converts to a shawl.
