Mother’s Day is approaching. I’m generally careful when listening to the radio around this time. For a few years now on Mother’s Day, I stopped going to church. And I don’t listen to the radio. I don’t want to be sad and reminded of what I don’t have. I don’t want to be reminded of what I’m not either. Although, I’m believing 2022 will be a better year for me.
However, if I’m in a good mood and feel like I can manage my emotions there are some Mother’s Day songs that I really like. I feel they give a great description of being a mother. Do you remember my post from last year about the tv moms? These mothers aren’t like them.
R&B/Hip Hop Mother’s Day Songs
1. Sadie- The Spinners
Sadie Who doesn’t love this song? It’s been sampled a few times. Our grandparents know this song for sure. A memorable line in the song for me is, “If there’s a heaven up above, I know she’s teaching angels how to love.”
2. Dedicated- R. Kelly
OMG, I love this song. This is one of my favorites by R. Kelly. This song is dedicated to his favorite girl, his mother. And I definitely think of my mother when I hear it.
3. A Song for Mama- Boyz II Men
The song was introduced in the movie, Soul Food soundtrack. It’s a beautiful song. After my mom died, I avoid listening to it.
4. Dear Mama – Tupac
This song is a rap/hip-hop classic! It samples “Sadie” by The Spinners. You can hear this song on the radio all throughout the year. I think this is one of Tupac’s best songs.
5. I’ll Always Love My Mama- The Intruders
Here’s another song that your grandparents know. We played this song at my grandma’s 70th birthday party. The lyrics go like this, “I’ll always love my mama, she’s my favorite girl, I’ll always love my mama she brought me in this world.”
6. Baby Mama- Fantasia
“Baby Mama” is on Fantasia’s first CD. Yes, I still have mine! When the song came out, Fantasia received some backlash for it. Some felt it was glorifying being a baby mama. Overall it’s just acknowledging the struggles of being a single mother.
Gospel Songs
7. Faded Rose- Shirley Caesar
Oh I loved this song growing up. It has a whole new meaning for me now. In the song, Shirley sings about a daughter who says, “If I had a million dollars I’d line your grave with gold, but that wouldn’t wake you from your sleep…… but I try to make you happy while you live.”
8. I Remember Mama- Shirley Caesar
Man if you want me to cry, play this song. The song recounts Shirley and her siblings growing up with fond memories of their mother.
9. No Charge- Shirley Caesar
Again, Shirley is telling us a story. Kinda reminds me of a country song. It describes the mother telling her child about the sacrifices the mother made with no expectations of receiving monetary gain. At the end, she concludes that the cost of real love is no charge, just like God’s love for us.
10. I Thought You’d Like to Know- Candi Staton
This is another tear-jerker. I say this song is like a love letter to a mother from an adult child who recalls the heartaches she put her praying mother through.
Okay, I hope you guys remember some of these songs, or maybe I introduced you to some you didn’t know. You just don’t know how many times my tear ducts welled up writing this post. If your mother is still alive, spend time with her, get to know her story, love on her, and don’t take her for granted. Here is a link to some gifts if you still need to go shopping for your mom. Lastly, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, future moms, and mother figures!
