I don’t know about you, but I’m glad to be a woman. I’m not just any woman, but a Black woman. I’m fearfully and wonderfully made. In case you didn’t know, I don’t have it all together. I’m still learning, growing, and getting better in certain areas.
In the words of Dr. Maya Angelou, I’m a woman. Phenomenal woman. Yep, that’s me. Like the words in The Clark Sisters song “Masterpiece” (The Return album) says- “I’m one of a kind, special design, I’m a masterpiece. Yea, I’m a masterpiece.” Ladies, you are too!
Here are few songs in my opinion that celebrate aspects of being a woman. These songs cover our power, strength, physique, pain, and insecurities.
Proud to Be a Woman Playlist
1. I’m Every Woman– Whitney Houston version and Chaka Khan’s
When I saw Whitney’s video for the song I was in love. Whitney was pregnant with Bobbi Kristina and she just looked so happy, radiant, and pretty. I could feel all the love that TLC, Chaka Khan, and the background dancers were giving her. I knew I wanted that same experience when I became a woman.
Also if there are any Tom Joyner Morning Show fans, this was Jay Anthony Brown’s “man jam”.
2. Pieces of Me– Ledisi
This is my favorite Ledisi song. This gal can sang!! My favorite part is
“So when you look at my face, you gotta know that I made of everything love and pain, Like every woman I know, I’m complicated for sure, but when I love, I love til there’s no love no more.”
3. Superwoman– Alicia Keys
This song reminds me of the life of Black woman. We give so much to other people including jobs, church, children, and family that there’s little time for ourselves. I can relate when Alicia says “Even when I’m a mess, I still put on a vest with an S on my chest, oh yes, I’m a superwoman.” Been there, done that. How about you?
4. Take Me as I Am – Mary J. Blige
Here’s one of my all-time favorite songs by Mary. In the song, Mary was being a woman who recognized her worth. When this song came out, I was in my very first apartment, living on my own. I was reaching the point where the next guy I was interested in had to take me as I was. I knew my worth and was not about to settle.
5. Woman– Raheem Devaughn
Here’s a song where a man is showing women some love. Raheem is appreciating the women for all that we do and all we’ve been through.
6. Video– India Arie
In the song, India is exuding being a woman with self-love. She is embracing her natural God-given body and not letting material things define who she is.
7. All Woman– Lisa Stansfield
This song came out in the early 1990s. If you listen to the words, you’ll learn that it’s actually a story of a relationship. The man doesn’t seem to be as attracted to the woman he fell in love with. The woman stands up for herself and identifies her qualities beyond her looks. Then towards the end, the man actually affirms and appreciates her womanhood.
8. Woman – Andreya Triana
This song is featured on the Netflix movie Self Made about Madame CJ Walker. I love the content of the song. I actually heard the entire song after posting an Instagram story in March.
9. Man! Feel I Like A Woman– Shania Twain
Shania Twain is a country/pop artist. This song was so hot back in the late 1990s. It has a sexy vibe to it.
10. Independent Women– Destiny’s Child
This song became an anthem when it was released. I was becoming grown. I was already proud to be independent, making my own money, etc. but when this song dropped, my independence was amplified even more.
