If the pandemic didn’t teach us anything, it was who was important to us. You can choose how you want to define family. Family can be biological and/or the people you care about and they reciprocate the same feelings. These can be friends, neighbors, or for some people even coworkers.
Keeping the family together is important. I know we can get busy with all the many things we have going on, but make time for the ones you love. Whether it’s a text, phone call, or a card, show them that you love them.
Here are some heartwarming songs that I like.
1. Family Affair- Sly and the Family Stone
It’s a family affair! You can’t help but get up a dance. I love to see families working together and gathering together. Speaking of families working together, Sly’s brother and sister were in the group along with other musicians.
2. Family Reunion- Jill Scott
Jill Scott is a good storyteller. She is good about singing of food. I love this song. She talks about Grandma making a blanket for the new baby, Uncle Dave on the BBQ grill, and Aunt Juicy drinking her drink and about to get lit! Well sounds like a family I know for sure. Disclaimer, there is one curse word in the song.
3. We Are Family- Sister Sledge
Sister Sledge was a musical group composed of four sisters. Some may think the song is called “I Got All My Sisters With Me”. This song just might be the Aunties Anthem of the disco days. lol.
4. A Song For Mama- Boyz II Men
This song debuted in the movie, Soul Food. It pays homepage to all the loving mothers. It’s a very beautiful song. Since my mother isn’t here, it is hard for me to listen now. Like the new phrase that’s popular now, it hits different.
5. Family Reunion- The O’Jays
Do you remember the last family reunion you attended? Family reunions can be whatever you make it. On my mother’s side, we haven’t had an official reunion, but it seems like one when there’s a funeral. In the song, I like how Eddie Levert breaks down the roles that are within the family.
6. Grandma’s Hands- Bill Withers
I am blessed because I have both of my grandmothers living. Honestly, I don’t know many people my age or slightly older who can say that their grandmother is still living. In the song, Bill sings about going to church with his grandmother on Sunday and receiving wisdom from her. On another note, the R&B group Blackstreet sampled this song for “No Diggity”.
7. Just the Two of Us– Will Smith
“Just the Two of Us”, is a song originally done by Bill Withers. Will Smith sampled it for his song. Will discusses the joys of being a father to his son. When it was released, it was kind of groundbreaking in my opinion. Back then, 20 years ago men would definitely be labeled soft for showing emotions like this.
Will has a new biography out. Have you read it yet? It’s on Amazon. While you’re over there, check out my newly published #1 Best Seller, Quit Making Excuses & Loc Your Hair.
8. Blended Family- Alicia Keys
Today, there are lots of blended families. Whereas in the past, stepfamily was the terminology. Blended sounds better. In the song, Alicia is referring to her husband’s son that he had from a previous marriage. The song lets him know that she loves him too as if he was her own.
9. Friends and Family– The Isley Brothers
The song was released in 2021. It’s an upbeat song that makes you want to move for sure.
10. Lean on Me- Bill Withers
To me “Lean on Me” is more like a song about friendship. Friends are family. Most times not by blood. Hardships or important life events can be hard to cope with and who’s that person you’d call for help? A friend. Because we all need someone to lean on when we need a hand, a listening ear, or encouragement. I appreciate that value in my friends. Shout out to the two that will read this post as soon as it drops. Lol
I hope you enjoy the holidays with your family! Be blessed. 💞
